Community Fund

As part of our guiding cooperative principles, Isle of Skye Renewables Co-operative firmly believes that our success depends on a thriving local community and more widespread support for renewable energy.

The Isle of Skye Renewable Energy Cooperative are pleased to advise that applications for community grant funding are now open for the 2025 period. Since its creation, the Isle of Skye Renewable Energy Cooperative has awarded hundreds of thousands of pounds to community projects across the Skye and Lochalsh region. 

You can read examples of projects that Isle of Skye Renewable Energy Cooperative have supported below, and more information can be found in the guidance note. Please read this before you fill in an application.

Please note that the amount of funds available for award varies each year. As such, the Isle of Skye Renewable Energy Cooperative reserves the right to close the application window in advance of the end of the year, if sufficient funds have been allocated.

Radio Skye

Isle of Skye Renewables are supporting Radio Skye with a grant to run a project aimed at youth members (16-24), to inspire and educate them about how they can take responsibility for sustainability at a local level.

Isle of Skye renewables are supporting Uig Community Hall with a grant to fund energy efficiency measures, particularly insulation. This is part of a bigger project to create a welcoming and accessible community space.

Viewfield Garden Collective

Isle of Skye Renewables are supporting the Viewfield Garden Collective with a grant to make improvements to their polytunnel and raised beds, as well as adding a new composting system to improve their outdoor classroom area.

Isle of Skye Renewables are supporting Skye Mountain Rescue with a grant towards installing a solar PV array on their new Portree base.

Atholl House Hotel

In 2023 IoSRC gave Atholl House Hotel in Dunvegan, a grant of £7,290 to fund the installation of  compost system. The composter is turning the majority of their kitchen waste into something useful. The compost will be used on their new herb beds and also distributed to the local school and the Lets Make Dunvegan…

Waternish Community Hall Solar

In 2023 we granted Waternish Community Hall £25,000 to help fund the installation of solar panels. These panels are reducing the energy costs of the hall. The panels are ground mounted and were installated in 2024:

Uigshader Living Forest

Towards the end of 2023, IoS Renewable Coop granted £25,000 to Uigshader Living Forest so they could install an off-grid power supply to the woodland. Here are some updated photos of the project: a barn has been constructed complete with solar panels, and is in use by the community.

Dunvegan Community Hall

In 2023 Dunvegan Community Hall received £4,000 to put towards phase one of their energy efficiency program for the hall. Phase 1 funded the installation of new windows and doors for that hall.

In 2023 IoSRC gave funding to ATLAS Arts to help them set up The School of Plural Futures program. A long-term, youth led, creative learning program exploring climate justice from a rural and island perspective. A grant of £1000 was awarded to go towards the cost of creating a sustainable living/work space that is open to the wider community. Eunoia Studio will be a place that creates art in a more sustainable way with a low carbon footprint using traditional techniques and methods and offering educational courses.
